Two (2) Senate publications, one (1)from the 4th Congress, 21st Session (1836), and one (1) marked "Senate No. 5, Legislature, 1845.", from the Committee on Public Lands regarding the Choctaw Treaty, and a relatively early report from the Committee on Indian Affairs respectively. ARKANSAS-LOSSES BY CHOCTAW TREATY. {to accompany bill H.R. No. 208.], January 23, 1836., Mr. Casey, from the Committee on Public Lands, to which the subject had been referred, made the following report: The Committee on the Public Lands, to which was referred the Memorial of the Legislature of the Territory of Arkansas, praying for a donation of one quarter section of the unappreciated public land to each head of a family who resided west of the present western boundary of the Territory of Arkansas, as an indemnity for the loss of certain improvements which were ceded to the Choctaws by the Government, beg leave to report:", 16 pages, 221 x 145 mm. (8 1/2 x 5 3/4 in.), glue-bound, in part: " That prior to the treaty of 1821, between the United States and the Choctaw Indians the settlements in Arkansas extended some forty or fifty miles further west than they do at present. That in that section of the country... courts of justice had been regularly held... without the knowledge or consent of those people [settlers], this country, including them, was transferred to the Choctaw Indians, and the inhabitants ordered off for the settlement of the Indians..." Minor toning, very light creasing, overall fine condition. AND, Report of the Select Committee on Indian Affairs, 5 pages, 232 x 150 mm. (9 x 6 in.), 1845, with deaccession stamp from Trinity Library, Watkinson Library at bottom margin, in part: "The select committee on Indian Affairs, to whom was referred 'the circular of the Hon. T. Hartley Crawford, from the Bureau on Indian Affairs of the War Department, suggesting the passage of a law for the more effectual prevention of any traffic in ardent spirits with the Indian tribes,' have, according to order, had the same under consideration, and have directed their chairman to report: That they have seen, with deep regret, the pernicious effects of that traffic upon the unfortunate Indians. In every contest between aboriginal intellect and physical appetite, the latter has uniformly obtained an easy victory. Excluded as the Indian is, from any community of interest with the whites-prohibited from becoming a citizen by the existing laws of naturalization, and by our State constitution-with slight inducement, and still less inclination to make any considerable advances in civilization or the arts, he stands isolated and alone, beyond the reach of moral suasion, and incapable of personal effort, he falls and unresisting victim of strong drink..." Very toned, the paper is fragile, edge wear, overall very good condition. (2 items)
