Manuscript Document Signed , 1pp. 2.5" x 8" where W.W. Hawkins promises to pay to John Rogers, "on or before the 25th of Dec(ember)," the sum of $25, being the annual rent for "his negro girl, Lucy." Hawkins also promises to provide "the usual clothing of hired servants" to the Slave. No town or city is mentioned in this promissory note, but from other documents in this group, we know that by 1851, John Rogers had died, and this same Slave, Lucy, and her child, were awarded to W.W. Hawkins as partial settlement of a debt owed him by Rogers. The executor of the estate was Joseph W. Campbell, who lived in Albemarle County, Virginia. Hawkins and Rogers likely also lived in the same county. Very good condition.
