Rare Virginia Female School printed Commencement Day programme, 2pp. 4to., "Thirteenth COMMENCEMENT DAY at Petersburg Female College," July 3, 1867, with great two letter describes enjoying the many events of the day written, on July 4th, by J. C. Granbury, whose letter, reads, in part: "I send you the Commencement and Concert. The great day passed off pleasantly, the intense heat excepted…everyone complained of the fervid atmosphere…the girls were prettily attired and looked well…Jane was very sweet and acted her part admirably…at night she held a beautiful bouquet…all the essays were good. Pres. Carr made a brief and very appropriate address on delivering the diplomas. He told the graduates that they must now give up their pilots and steer their own barks…spent most of the afternoon at the College…he wishes to add other studies to the course: Geology, Physiology, Natural History. Also to establish some sort of library society….he thinks…that girls must drum differently in after life…there is no reason for not beginning it at school…J. C. Granbury." Light toning, else VG
