Check signed:,"Pat Dolan", 7-¼ x2-¾, Marfa, Texas, March 2, 1892. Un-numbered check, drawn on Humphris & Co. General Merchandise and Ranch Supplies. Filled out in Dolan's hand, payable to "Young Brothers" for seven dollars. Nothing written on verso. Irish immigrant Pat Dolan served in the Union army during the Civil War. After the war, he moved west, driving a stagecoach before becoming a Texas lawman. He was a Texas Ranger (1874-1879), rising to the rank of captain. He was twice a county sheriff, in Uvalde County before his Ranger service and in Jeff Davis County afterward. Usual back cancellation stamps touching "t" of Pat and "o" of Dolan. Bank stamp on front. Soiled at upper left corner. Slightly soiled. 1-inch tear in the middle. Otherwise, fine condition.
