Charles George Werner (1909-1997) was an American editorial cartoonist who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1939 and later worked 47 years for the Indianapolis Star. An original pen/ink cartoon signed by "Werner" in white at the bottom of 14" x 17" titled "20 After". The top view is captioned "1919"; the Treaty of Versailles has been signed, the mood is bright, and there is a dove with an olive branch flying. The bottom view shows the same globe 20 years later; dark clouds hang heavy over the world and there is the skull of death peeking over the European horizon. The Treaty of Versailles was the official peace treaty that ended World War I. It required that Germany accept full responsibility for the war and make economy-wrecking reparations. In Germany, the shock and humiliation of the treaty helped cause the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Adolf Hitler to power. In 1939, Hitler invaded one European country after another, starting World War II. This excellent cartoon is on 14" x 17" coquille board and is accomplished in ink, black artist crayon, and white paint wash. Fine condition. Provenance, Heritage #26614, 2006, $836.
