War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Charles W. Peabody, Co. H, South Carolina 1st Orr’s Rifles Infantry, 3pp. quarto, Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, October 7, 1861, and reads in part: “...I have not so much as passed the guard line to see what lies around me, but I suppose you have came through the columns of the newspapers that Col. Orr has been made commander in chief in and over Charleston Harbor. His forces already upon the island will number about twelve hundred men, exlusive of the forts which will increase the number to about fifteen hundred and fifty. Among the first mentioned are a fine Marien Company, an Artillery, and a Cavalry company...We had quite an interesting time ...by the presentation of a regimental flag from the ladies of Charleston...we will have a Naval engagment at this place before very long. We have three or four small Confederate war vessels in the harbor, they having run the blockade some time ago. They have also been taking men on board, but for what purpose we cannot tell. The British vessel which run the blockade at this place some six or eight weeks ago passed out under the cover of darkness one night last week, and it is said carried out the War Commissioners, Mssrs. Slidell and Mason for England and France...” Fine condition.
