War-date Union identification badge belonging to John E. Hunt, 42nd Masschusetts Infantry, with image of George Washington on recto and verso with “JOHN E. HUNT Co. C, 42 REG MASS VOL.” 1-1/8” diamter. This Washington Style Civil War ID Disc is of the same style pictured in Maier & Stahl ‘Identification Discs of Union Soldiers’ . This ID was purchased by Hunt as a 16 year old drummer boy for the 42nd Mass Vols. When his age was discovered, he was sidelined until 18 when he reenlisted in the 59th Mass with his brother, Harrison, who was captured at the Crater and died as a prisoner of War in Danville, Virginia.
