A rare Reconstruction era, ca. 1870, photograph, 3 1/4" x 3 3/4", on slightly larger yellow board mount, of an impoverished former slave family preparing to seek a better life. The family's father shoulders his musket while his family are loaded in and around their ox drawn cart. His oldest son (not more than ten years old) takes the helm as driver on the cart while his shoeless mother and barefoot baby brother bring up the rear. Signed, in period ink, by Emil Ludekin (born 1856 residence Aiken, S. C. 1880) on the verso. Irregular edge wear to mount, else VG.
