[WIA Chancellorsville 5/02/63 & POW MIssionary Ridge, Tenn., 11/25/63], Frederick, [Maryland], Dec. 22, 1861, in part: "…last Sabbath night…I was standing by the fire and the boys were singing some of the hymns very unbecomingly…which made me feel much worse...I wept bitterly and I came into my tent and lifted up my heart in prayer to God…we was getting furloughs to come home for 8 to 10 days…they have now postponed them for a while as the rebels are getting very strong at Edward's Ferry and Williamsport. They expect to have a very hard battle before long. There is some 15 thousand [rebels] that is trying to get across on to the Maryland Hites…we left Daverns town on the 2nd…we had a nice review on last Monday near Frederick. There was a great gathering there to see us. There was only one brigade out. Each brigade taking its own turn…we are to be on review again. The President and General McClellan, General Banks and their side pieces, you know what I mean, their ladies. The whole Division will be out…it will be a great day in Frederick…William Crawford…".
