A good Maryland House of Delegate members letter, 1p. 4to., written by GEORGE M. SMITH, delegate from Baltimore city, Snow Hill, [Va.], May 22, 1852, to Delegate John L. Hearn of Worcester, County, Maryland, reading, in part: "I observe that [George W.] Landing has introduced a bill relating to the publication of legal notices, etc. in Worcester Co., [Maryland]à.the whole thing is aimed at me and as you are aware has its origin in personal spiteàI have always had to avow [?] on other resources as to sustain the paper and it would be too hard if the party were to permit it to be injured in this way. It is not necessary for me to argue to matter with you. I am sure you will do all in your power to defeat it. You nor your father [?] were presented for nomination or election that I did not uniformly and zealously stand by you and I know that it is only necessary to ask it to secure your interest for me now. Please see to this thing at once & secure the cooperation of my friends of the Kent County delegation & Mr. Casey [John C. Cacy of Kent County] of the Senateàplease write me by early mailàG. M. Smith." The original transmittal leaf, addressed: "Dr. John L. Hearn, Ho. Del., Annapolis City" with a "Snow Hill, Va. May 24" postmark and 5 cent stamped post rate, is included. Light soiling, else VG.
