Manuscript poem, 2pp, with pencil and cross-out corrections. In large part; Oh I see the child that neber was born, neber had a mudder; 'Spects I grew a nigger, just like any oder. They whipped me till the blood pours down, Ole Misses use to do it; Said she'd cut my heart right out, But nebber could go to it; This is Topsy's savage song, Topsy 'cute and clever; Hurrah! Hurrah! then, for the white child's right! Slavery forever! I 'spects Ise mighty wicked, Thats just what I am; On'y you just give me a chance, Wont I raise Ole Sam! 'Taint no use in being good, cus Ise black, you see; I neber cared for nothing yet, and nothing cares for me. Don't you die, Miss Evy, else I go dead too; I knows I'se wicked, but Ill try, and be all good to you. You have taught me better things, though I'm nigger skin; You have found poor Topsy's heart, spite of all its sin. Oh don't you die, Miss Eva, dear, else I go dead too; Tho I'se black, Ise sure that God will let me go with you. This was Topsy's savage song Topsy cute and clever, Hurrah! Hurrah! for the white child's rights-! Humanity forever!
