Quaker schoolmaster's letter, 2pp. folio, written by "Louis Stabler & Ca 1855," Springdale B.[Boarding] School, [Purcelville, Va.], "10th Mo. 16th, 1855," to his parents, reading, in part: "I received thy letter…which was very short…it was opened [on] our visiting day on seventh day when the letter came and y being away so I didn't get it until first day afternoon…in regard to that omnibus of Elgar's being broken…or rather coming to pieces…is very slight…for there wasn't anything broken that I remember but the seat…which some of the screws came out of [the] back. It was the front seat on which William Moore & William John sat…the screws came out before we got half way up…we tied it up with a rope…the back came off in going back. William John didn't use it. He laid it in the back of the carriage. When I got it there was only two [screws] that would do. The one left was broken so it wouldn't do. The one left was broken so it wouldn't do & this one I hardly thought was fit to go…I suppose thee & mother are going to Yearly Meeting…[To Sister] I received thy short letter….the spoke of thy trip to Ohio. I am glad the[e] put it off till after yearly meeting…Mary and Lizzy are going to Baltimore next week to meeting and then to Philadelphia…when thee writes tell me when Lizzie Stabler is to be married or if she is married yet…Louis Stabler & Co. 1855." Also included is the original transmittal cover addressed: "Edwd. Stabler P. M. [Postmaster] Sandy Spring, Md." postmarked with Purcelville, Va. and two postmaster's "Free" cancels. Light spotting, else VG.
