Early war-date Southern fire-brand's letter written by SYDENHAM MOORE (1817-1862) requesting Alabama Governor Andrew B. Moore's insight into organizing a company composed of the "flower of our young men" to help defend the newly formed Southern Confederacy. Tennessee born Moore was educated at the University of Alabama before becoming a respected Greene Co., Alabama attorney. He served in the Mexican War as a captain in Colonel Coffey's Alabama regiment. Eventuality, he became brigadier general of the Alabama militia and then a representative to Congress from 1857-1861. During the war, he helped raise and then become colonel command of the 11th Alabama Infantry until he was killed in action during the battle of Seven Pines, Va., May 31, 1862. On April 22, 1861, just days after Fort Sumter was fired upon, Moore wrote from his home at Greensboro, Ala., to Governor Andrew B. Moore, in part: "…let me know…how many companies have been tendered…how many more if any are still wanting…if more companies are wanting I can raise one (in addition to the 2 already raised by Messers. Jones & Hale) from this city in 24 hours-composed of the flower of our young men. If I could be assured by yourself or the Secy. of War that such company…would be thrown into a Regt. with the companies already tendered from Dallas…I would call around me at once such a company as would do the South good service in this her hour of need…there are not a few here who served 12 months in Mexico with me…Sydenham Moore…". Overall, VG to near fine.
