A war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. James W. Hooper, Co. H, 5th New Hampshire, Camp Cashio [California], Washington, Nov. 12, 1861, to his father, in part: "àwe took steamer andàlanded. At Jersey City we took the carsàthere is no rocks here. They build their rail fence here. They build their chimney out side of their houses. There was negrow [who] told us that they have their time when they are 21. He says that some are used well and some are used hard. There is not half so many whites as their blacks. Last night there was a nigro concert when we was half starvedàdirect the letters to Washington, D. C. Co. H, 5 reg. N. H. James W. Hooper." VG
