MAGRUDER, John Bankhead (1807-1871) Career army officer who served with distinction in the US Army in the Mexican-American War, as a Confederate general in the Civil War, and as a postbellum general in the Imperial Mexican Army. As a Confederate general, 'Prince John' routed Union forces at Big Bethel and recaptured Galveston in a daring attack in January 1863. Partly-printed DS, twice signed "J. Bankhead Magruder," one page, 9-1/2" x 7-1/2", December 1, 1858. Requisition receipt for "Forage for Public Horses, in the service of Lt. Company 'I' 1st Regiment of Artillery U.S. Army for thirty-one days, commencing the 1st of December 1858 and ending on the 31st of December, 1858, at Fort Adams, R.I." Magruder signs twice at the conclusion to confirm receipt of forage for 44 horses, comprising 12 pounds of oats, 14 pounds of hay, and 12 pounds of fodder.
