A rare Alabama Governor's war-date letter, 1p. 4to., on "Executive Department," stationery, written by Governor Andrew B. Moore, Montgomery, Ala., April 30, 1861, reading, in part: "The bearer Elias is the body servant of Capt. [F. Winston] Hunter of the Metropolitan Guards [Co. F, 3rd Alabama Infantry] from Montgomery, Ala. and goes as such to Lynchburg where the Ala. troops rendezvous. The conductors of the Rail Roads from Montgomery to Dalton, Georgia & Lynchburg will pass him free of charge. A. B. Moore, Gov. of Ala." ANDREW B. MOORE (1807-1873) was the first war-time governor of Alabama, taking his state out of the Union in January, 1861. Following Lincoln's election in 1860, Moore took decisive steps to safeguard Alabama's financial and defensive capabilities. He urged banks to suspend specie payments and to exchange large amounts of capital for state bonds. He ordered the state militia to seize the arsenal at Mt. Vernon, Forts Gaines and Morgan, at Mobile Bay and contributed troops to assist in capturing the Federal forts at Pensacola, Florida. He used his influence to elect Jefferson Davis president of the Confederacy over the more fire-brand William L. Yancey. After he left office, Moore was appointed special aide de camp to Governor John Gill Shorter; working hard to coordinate to help supply General Albert Sidney Johnston army in northern Alabama. At the end of the war he was arrested and confined at Fort Pulaski, Savannah, Georgia before being released in August 1865. After which he returned to his law practice at Marion, Ala.
