WICKHAM, William Carter (1820-1888) was a lawyer, judge, politician, and an important Confederate cavalry general who fought in the Virginia campaigns during the American Civil War. Autograph Note Signed, 8” x 6”, “W.C. Wickham, Capt, Comg. Cavalry” June 24, 1861, Fairfax C.H. the top half of the document is in the hand and signed by G.W. Lacy, “Captain Wickham Comdg. Cavalry will immediately furnish twenty or twenty-five of his best mounted men, with an officer to go under guidance of Col. Lipscomb, Actg. Aid to the Comg. Genl., for special detached service to continue probably a few hours only. By order G. W. Lay AAAG “ this is followed by the Wickham note “Capt. Ball will furnish these men at once. Report at my office. W. C. Wickham Capt. Comg. Cavalry.” According to the book, Autographs of the Confederacy, Wickham is “A desirable signature”. At the battle of Bull Run, he was Captain of the Hanover Dragoons, Company G 4th Virginia Cavalry. Because of his distinction at First Manassas he was quickly made Lieut. Col. and then Colonel, just before being wounded at the battle of Williamsburg. In June of 1862 he was taken prisoner and two months later exchanged for Union Lieutenant Colonel Thomas A. Kane. He served with Jeb Stuart on the raid on Catlett’s Station and was wounded again at the battle of Upperville, Va. on November 3rd, 1862. At the battle of Gettysburg, he led the 4th Virginia Cavalry and was made Brig General in September of 1863 for his brilliant service.
