The archive has 28 issues of the Boston Patriot, 4pp., disbound, VG. Each issue has a front page John Adams letter defending himself and his adminstration’s policies and programs. There are +/- 33 letters with a printed signature of John Adams. Only +/- 4 issues lack the printed signature. Most are front page column 1, “Correspondence of the Late President Adams”. The issue run from May 13, 1809 through December 30, 1809 and is a NOT COMPLETE consecutive run. Each Adams letter is complete within the issue and provides an exrtraordinary insight into the personal anamous between the two founding fathers. Before the presidential election of 1800, Alexander Hamilton wrote an essay (or what was known as a “pamphlet”) about John Adams, the leader of Hamilton’s Federalist party and the President of the United States called Concerning the Public Conduct and Character of John Adams, Esq. President of the United States that took a disparaging view of his tenure and character. It was sent out to many prominent Federalists. As it goes, the competing Democratic-Republican acquired a copy and publicly published it thereby affecting Adams chance of winning reelection in 1800 and affecting the Federalist Party’s (and Hamilton’s) prominence in the political scene. This led to the Jefferson presidency and Aaron Burr vice-presidency. After Jefferson's retirement from public life in 1809, Adams became more vocal. He published a three-year marathon of letters in the Boston Patriot newspaper, refuting line-by-line Hamilton's 1800 pamphlet. The initial piece was written shortly after his return from Peacefield and "had gathered dust for eight years." The complete run is transcribed on the US Govt site, https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Adams/99-02-02-5491
