A curious, rare, perhaps unique war-date document that spoofs the Union army's "Corps D'Afrique," 1p. 8vo., "Head-Qrs. Corps D'Afrique, Six-Mile Island, August, 27, 1863," being, "General Orders, No. 6," reading, in part: "…Colonels J. S. M'Cauley and E. F. Brown are hereby appointed brigadier generals…citizen Robt. Ferguson, is announced as Chief of Engineers…with the rank of Col…by command of Maj. Genl. Savage, T. R. Sinton. Brig. Genl…". Obviously, printed with the aim to poke fun at the Federal Army's approach of organizing black troops with a civilian appointed colonel in the unit's engineer corps while the major general issuing the order was "by command of Maj. Genl. Savage." Research indicates that this document was published in northern Kentucky. Six Mile Island lies in the Ohio River between Indiana and Kentucky while one of Kentucky's native sons, Thomas R. Sinton, served in the Union army as captain. Perhaps, either Robert Ferguson, the civilian, or Sinton were the intended targets, but we do not know the intended purpose of this piece. Nonetheless, this document is worthy of further research in order to unlock the mystery surrounding this piece. Folds, else VG.
