WILLIAM M. WHERRY (1836-1918). American Civil War First Lieutenant of Company D, 3rd U.S. Reserve Missouri Infantry, Wherry was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861. He served on the frontier against the Indians and during the Spanish American War, retired at the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Army August 25, 1877-Dated. Headquarters Department of West Point, United States Military Academy, Transfer Document, Signed by Medal of Honor Winner General William M. Wherry, Choice Very Fine. Dated at West Point. Special orders No. 103. 7.5" x 10", 1 page Document Signed "Wm. M .Wherry," Act. Asst. Adjt. General ads his huge bold 3.25" long signature at the conclusion. Minor mounting remnants on back edge, overall very clean and well written on ruled clean wove period paper. This Transfer Document relieving 1st Lieutenants by command of the famous General Schofield. Wherry is also the author of "Lyon's Campaign in Missouri".Wherry received the Medal of Honor for actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861. Wherry's Medal of Honor was issued after the war on October 30, 1895 with the citation "Displayed conspicuous coolness and heroism in rallying troops that were recoiling under heavy fire".
