Great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written on patriotic stationery, by Corp. Harry Hasson, Co. F, 72nd Penn. Vols., (Baxter's Fire Zouaves), [KIA Gettysburg, 7/03/63, during Pickett's Charge], "Camp Advance, Va., Sept. 26, 1861"…we drill in companies and squads. The ground here is not fit for drilling as it is all hills and hollows. Some days we work in the fort which is called fort Baker. Yesterday there was grate excitement here on account of some 30,000 of our troops moving towards Falls Church where…some 40,000…rebels where in camp. 120 of the zouaves where in the line. 10 of our Co. where there. The zouaves where in the advance…Gen. Baker wanted to draw them on the Rebels but they would not fight. They fired cannon balls and shells at our men but they done no damage. Then our men fired a shell or tow and the rebels flew. Our troops returned last night with all but tow who was wounded, one of the N. Y. 79th and one of the Michigan sharpshooters. Minney [possibly William M. Bunn WIA Savage Station, Va., 6/29/62] was out and is returned again…Harry Hasson, (good bye now but not forever)…Co. F, Cap[t. Isaac] McBride, [WIA Antietam], Baxter's Fire Zouaves, Washington or elsewhere." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "For Mr. Thomas Hasson in care of P. W. S. B[altimore] R. R. Co. office Wilmington, Del." Light soiling, else VG
