BEAUREGARD, Pierre G.T. (1818-1893) Louisiana-born author, civil servant, politician, inventor, and the first prominent general for the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Autograph Note closes a copying of six page exchange of notes sent to and by Beauregard during the first battle of Manassass., in full “I am having copy of your report made to send you. Please send me a copy of Johnston’s, which I cannot find anywhere.” The opening statement in red ink written to Beauregard sets the stage, “The following is a literal copy from your office book. The orders do not all occur in the same order as below and are mixed up with copies of orders of the 18th. I have arranged them between you and your Generals in their probable order.” Each of the communications has commentary in red ink in the margin. Here are a few brief excerpts, from Beauregard to Ewell, Manassas Junction, July 21, 1861, “You will hold yourself in readiness to take the offensive at Centerville at a moment’s notice ... I intend to take the offensive throughout my front as soon as possible.” Then from Bonham, “Genl. Lonstreet has just sent me word that preparations in making from the best information he gets; to attack as both in front this morning ...The enemy has deployed and come into the field ... I do not hear any movement from Ewell.” Then from Ewell, “I have received no orders except to hold myself in readiness ...” then from Alexander, “Very large force visible in Bull Run Valley in a field 2 miles above Stone Bridge. ...”
