Imprint "SPEECH OF HON. BENJ. F. BUTLER." 8pp. octavo, 1860, with content on "The Charleston Convention. The Platform of Principles. Douglas' Nomination an Impossibility. What is to be done at Baltimore by the Democracy." This speech given May 15, 1860 was after the Democrats disbanded their Charleston convention after a Deep South walkout, having failed to nominate a presidential candidate, and resolved to meet later at Baltimore. During the interval, Butler explains his opposition to Senator Douglas as a candidate "he is unelectable, the South being firmly opposed to him." Instead "Beast" Butler supports the nomination of Jefferson Davis. Fine condition.
