Seated war-date CDV view of Alexander Hays (1819-1864) who saw service in the Mexican War, became colonel of the 63rd Penn. Vols. at the beginning of the Civil War, was severely wounded in the leg at Second Bull Run, rose through the ranks to brevet major general before being killed at the opening of the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 when a musket ball crashed into his skull. Very light wear, else VG.
