Printed On The Ship Wabash, Broadside, 6” x 16”, on bright yellow paper large headline, “Anniversary of WASHINGTON’S BIRTHDAY!!” Followed by a concise event description, “The Wabash Minstrels, Respectfully announce that they will give an entertainment on board the U.S. Frigate ‘Wabash’ off Charleston, S.C., Monday Evening, February 22d, 1864.” The program is presented in two parts. As expected, occasional reference to Blacks such as; “African Brothers”, “Nigger demon.” ... plus, unsigned letter, written by “Raymond P. Rodgers”to his oldest son, “Mr. Raymond P. Rodgers, Newport, Rhode Island. Rodgers was a career Naval officer who served in Mexican War and was promoted to Commander in 1861, serving on the Wabash at the battle of Port Royal and the capture of Fort Pulaski. The 3page letter is written aboard “USS Wabash, Port Royal, 24 Feb. 1862. In part, “”I wish you could have been aboard last night to hear our Ethiopian menstruels’s sing. The gun deck was pretty decorated and lighted; they had some scenery ... you know we have seven hundred persons belonging to this ship, so the Menstruels had quite a large audience. ... Take good care of your dear Mother for me. You know how much I rely upon my oldest son. May God bless you my dear boy ever your affectionate Father. Included is a digital output of the Minstrels aboard the Wabash
