Muster Roll of Company C, of the Ninth Regiment Cavalry, Being Captain Charles Beyer’s Company, Under Colonel Edward Hatch, From February 28, 1874 to April 30, 1874, 32” x 20,” signed by Beyer. There are tissue mends at creases yet very legible. The muster lists 54 Buffalo Soldiers including future Medal of Honor (1879) winner, Clinton Greaves. In the 1879 citation it is noted that Greaves “While part of a small detachment to persuade a band of renegade Apache Indians to surrender, his group was surrounded. Cpl. Greaves in the center of the savage hand-to-hand fighting, managed to shoot and bash a gap through the swarming Apaches, permitting his companions to break free.” There are three soldiers listed as “Apprehended from deserter March ‘74, 430 Reward for apprehension.” One soldier is noted to have drowned while bathing in the Rio Grand. During the Indian Wars of 1867-1891 the Ninth and Tenth Cavalries participated in eleven campaigns against hostile Indians, among whom were included Kiowas, Comanches, Utes, Cheyennes, Arapahoes, Kickapoos, Apaches, and Sioux. They were engaged in over 125 recorded battles and skirmishes, most of them in Texas and New Mexico
