COLFAX, Schuyler . (1823-1885) was an American journalist, businessman, and politician from Indiana. He served as a United States Representative (1855–69), Speaker of the House of Representatives (1863–69), and the 17th Vice President of the United States (1869–73). To date, he is one of only two Americans (John Nance Garner is the other) to have served as both House speaker and vice president. Autograph Letter Signed “Schuyler Colfax” as Vice President, to Elihu Washburne, datelined South Bend, August 27, 1873, 2pp., previously bound, rough at bid side else clean. In small part, “I was very glad ... to find your frank and emphathtic reply ... that I had not received the money of the $1200 SC or bearer check, Oak Ames so falsely swore upon me. And i hope the time will come when I can, in some way attest my f gratitude to you for this eveidence ...” This scandal occurred in 1872 when Union Pacific Railroad insiders formed the Credit Mobilier construction company and then cleverly hired themselves at inflated prices to build the transcontinental railroad line. To protect themselves, the directors also sold stock at below value to members of congress. Members of congress continued to support bills that supplied CMA. Congressman Oak Ames was the most responsible for this scandal, he essentially said if you give us your support you will be a part of the Credit Mobilier. Congress began investigating itself, and Grant's VP Schuyler Colfax, James G. Blaine (speaker of the house), and James A. Garfiled, and other congress members are implicated
