Carte de visite of Brevet Brigadier General Enrico Fardella, seated in uniform. Fine condition. Enrico Fardella (1821-1882) born in Sicily Italy. After participating in the Crimean War, he resigned from the Italian Army in April 1861 specifically to travel to the US to participate in the US Civil War. He was given permission to recruit a regiment, but was unable to enlist enough men and in Jan 1862, his men and those of another were assimilated into the 101st New York with Fardella as Colonel. Dec 1862, the men were transferred to the 37th NY and the officers were mustered out. Fardella next assumed command of the 51st New York, but resigned in protest of McClellan's leadership. In 1864, he assumed command of the 85th New York, which he commanded until he was captured at Plymouth April 19 1864 and imprisoned at Libby, Danville, and Charleston. He was made Bvt Brig Gen March 15, 1865 for distinguished service at Plymouth
