RODGERS, George Washington (1787–1832) naval officer. was promoted lieutenant, April 24, 1810, and assigned to duty on the sloop Wasp being present at the engagement between the Wasp and the Frolic, Oct. 18, 1812. He was included in the vote of thanks passed by Congress, and received a silver medal; 1828–30, and was promoted commodore and commanded the Brazil squadron, 1830-.32.A pair of Autograph Letters Signed “Geo. W. Rodgers” both written to Thomas J. Chew, U. S. Navy , New York. (It was Chew who witnessed Captain James Lawrence utter the words which became a Navy motto, Don't give up the ship). The first letter New London, July 21, 1827, 4pp., self-covering. Rodgers comments on several commands ... The Delaware, The Shark ... ... plus, New London, July 23, 1828, 4pp., self-covering. Rodgers asks for transfer forms and any possible new commands.
