War-date Confederate Manuscript Document Signed by “C. R. Holmes, A A A Gen'l" being an official copy of General Orders No. 27 given by A. P. Mason, A.A.A. Gen'l , one page, quarto, "Hd Qrs Dept Northern Va," February 28, 1862, in part: "Confidential…The following signals are published for the information of the Generals Commanding Divisions and Brigades and Commanders of Regiments and the Commanders of detached companies of Artillery, Infantry & Cavalry, and not to be made known to other officers, non commissioned officers, or privates of the different commands…4 Beat long roll signal, At Night Five (5) rockets in rapid succession from Capt Alexanders Quarters. By Day Five guns at Centerville. All sentinels on guard will be immediately instructed to report henceforth all rockets that may be seen at night in the direction of Captain Alexanders Quarters, or cannon heard in the day time at Centerville. By order of General Johnston." Fine condition. The author of this document was Captain Charles R. Holmes of South Carolina, a staff officer under Major General Joseph B. Kershaw. Holmes served in the Army of Northern Virginia through the Wilderness, then transferred to the Army of Tennessee. He was wounded on June 16 and July 28, 1864. He surrendered with General Johnston in North Carolina.
