War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed "Johnn Claiborne" 1pp. quarto, December 23, 1861, addressed to General Ruggles and reads in part: "...You will see from the letter which I received a few days ago from Mr. Benjamin that he cannot give me a staff appointment such as I asked (Quartermaster) unless on the recommendation of the Commdg officer of a Brigade on whose staff a vacancy may exist. If you are entitled to such a member of your staff, I shall feel obliged for your recommendation..." Fine condition.
