HILL, Benjamin Harvey (1823-1882) was a politician whose career spanned state and national politics, and the Civil War. He served in the Georgia legislature in both houses. Although he had opposed secession, he stayed with the South and served as a Confederate senator representing Georgia.After the war and near the end of the Reconstruction era, Hill was elected in 1874 to the United States House of Representatives, and in 1877 as a U.S. senator from Georgia. He served in the Senate until his death in 1882.Partly-printed Document Signed “Benj. H. Hill” as Senator, 1pp. oblong octavo, Washington D.C. May 7, 1880, requesting two copies of the Congressional Record for the second session of the 46th Congress. Fine condition...plus; WILLIAMS, Walter Washington (1854-1959) was a forager for Hood's Brigade and thus the last surviving veteran of the American Civil War.Check issued to Colonel Walter Williams from Brooklyn, New York, March 24, 1859, endoresed on verso “Col. Walter Williams 1025 W 23rd Houston, Texas.” Fine condition.
