War-date Confederate non-commissioned officer's letter, 2pp. folio., written by Sergeant Major Mann Page [WIA Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug. 9, 62], 21st Virginia Infantry, Winchester, [Virginia], Dec. 29, 1861, to his uncle, David Copeland Randolph, reading, in part: "…I requested you to pay Geo. H. Harrison one hundred Eighty dollars…I will also request you to buy thirty (30) shares of Va. State Stock…as to my private bills all I owe, one at Mr. Ira Smith for uniform coat & also ordered a pair of pants…also owe Ellett & Weisiger for a cap. These are all the things I have gotten since last July…we got to this camp xmas day and are camp[ed] about two miles of town…saw Copeland on Friday…his company is stationed at Genl. Jackson's Head. Qrts. on the edge of town. He looks very well…I can aryl express to you my dear uncle how much I feel for your great kindness in attending to my business…for if you were not to do it…I should be at a loss to know what to do and I know it has given you a great deal of trouble. Do what you think best with my things. I did not lock my drawers when I left & never did…on the top of my dress in my room you will find a album of Virginia with engraving of the different places in Virginia. Take it and carry it up to Aunt Hally as a xmas from me. Have it bound at Woodhouse and charged to me…go to Mitchell & Tyler's and buy a silver cup for little Mary from her brother Mann, now my uncle be sure and do these two things for if anything should happen to me I would like to have left the little darling something to remember me by. Your affectionate nephew, Mann Page…". Expected folds and soiling, else VG.
