Document Signed “Sam Mordecai” 8-1/4” x 3-1/2” Richmond September 5, 1818 being a L300 Sterling payment, VG. Samuel Mordecai was a merchant in Petersburg and Richmond, VA, and author of a book about the early history of Richmond, entitled "Richmond in By-Gone Days." He was a teacher in the successful Mordecai Female Academy run by his father, Jacob, in Warrenton, NC. Samuel served in the War of 1812 as a Corporal in Company 1 of the Corps d'Elite (Randolph's), Virginia Military.
