A good Western Virginia refugee's letter, 4pp. 8vo., on "Union & Constitution" patriotic stationery, written by a certain "D. D. Kline", Parkersburg, Va., April 29, 1862, to Miss. Sue R. Neff, Mt. Jackson, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, in part: "…well, I and company got into the Federal lines on the 18th & reached the Baltimore & Ohio Rail Road at New Creek more generally known as Paddytown…there we came here on the train near two hundred miles. We got safely through but not without difficulty…but we were never discouraged, every obstacle seemed only to strengthen our determination. I was almost driven to this course against my will…I am now enjoying peace & quietude…we concluded to stay until about the 1st of June when we will start for Dayton Ohio and thence to conference. I hope to see some of the Valley folks…I presume there has been quite a change since I left but I hope the people are spared. I reckon you have almost seen the "Elephant." This is what I expected and thought it was becoming quite clear…& I had no desire to have a part in it…Parkersburg is a town of about seven or eight thousand…situated on the banks of the Ohio & Kanawha rivers about 300 miles from Cincinnati which will be our rout to the meeting. Oh, how I wish I could see you there, but I reckon you don't care about seeing a runaway…D. D. Kline." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Light toning, else VG.
