A rare Confederate slave appraisal loss claim, 1p. 4to., in which slave owner Charles Yates Aglionby (1807-1891) Mount Pleasant Farm, Charlestown, Jefferson County, [West] Virginia claims that his slaves Jim and Richard ran away on July 25, 1861 with Union General Robert Patterson's army when that army retreated from the region. Mt. Pleasant farm was a 375 acre farm on which land owner Agliony claimed twenty slaves in the 1860 U. S. census. He made this claim on August 30, 1861 to F. A. Lewis, Justice of the Peace, for Jefferson Co., Virginia, reading, in part: "Whereas Charles Aglionby of the county of Jefferson and the state of Virginia personally appeared before me for a warrant to have appraised two Negroes…whom he alleges to have left his service from the 20th & 25th of July & whilst the invading army of the United States under General Patterson went in…two of his negroes Jim & Richard runaway…said Aglionby alleges the Negroes…of the following description. 1st Jim a black…in his seventeenth year. Also Richard copper colored 25 years old five feet nine or ten inches, active, straight and intelligent [and[ for some time had been hired to a carpenter & was handy with [tools] besides a good farm hand generally. [Charles] Aglionby says he has every reason to believe that said [slav]es left with [a person's name was here but crossed out] said army as did a great [m]any other slaves of the county…F. A. Lewis a justice of the peace in and for the above [co]unty do swear said Aglionby as to the above facts &…D. Moore, Joseph F. Abell, John S. Moore three disinterested free holders of said county to value [&] appraise said slaves to the best of their knowledge…F. A. Lewis (J. P.)." Paper loss on left margin backed by period paper, else VG
