A Confederate Civilian letter written by “O. M. Blanton”, 2pp., March 15, 1862, to Brigadier General Daniel Ruggles. In part, “”i fully intended to accept the position of Volunteer Aid on your staff, but on my arrival at home, I found that my brother W.C. Blanton had joined the Washington Cavalry .... Therefore I have the responsibilty not only of my own family but my brothers and Mothers plantations & when there are 14,000 negroes in this county and only 200 men of all ages fit for military duty in case of emergency, you can well perceive of my responsibilty now at home. ....”
