GOLDBOROOUGH, Louis Malesherbes (1805-1877) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy during the American Civil War. He held several sea commands during the Civil War, including that of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He was also noted for contributions to nautical scientific research. Document Signed "L.M. Goldsborough, Flag Officer" on 3pp. instructions, 8" x 13", VG. In small part, "U. S. FLAGSHIP MINNESOTA, Hampton Roads, November 10, 1861. The following general instructions are to be strictly observed by all concerned under my command: ..." continuing with 22 specifically numbered instructions. At the conclusion, it is ink signed by Goldsborough. Also glued into a blank area is a second separate General Order, 3-1/2" x 4", Nov 5, 1861 also signed "L.M. Goldsborough, Flag Officer. This GO concerns the handling of "contrabands can neither be expelled ... nor maintained unemployed ... they are to be enlisted ... with the understanding .. not to be rated higher than 'boys' at a compensation of ten dollars per month ..." ... plus an unsigned GENERAL ORDER, 6-1/2" x 8", June 9, 1862, issued by L.M. Goldsborough. VG
