RIPLEY, Roswell Sabine (1823-1887) was an officer in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and, despite being Northern-born, a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He was also an author and a prosperous South Carolina businessman. War-date Autograph Letter Signed “R.S. Ripley” 1pp. quarto, May 8, 1861, addressed to Colonel Arthur Middleton Manigault, it reads in part: “...Can you have all the large grained powder on Atlantic wharf at 4 PM tomorrow afternoon...” Very good condition.
