INGALLS, Rufus (1818-1893) Major General; He was present at the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the subsequent battles until the surrender of Lee, and at the surrender of the latter at Appomattox. Autograph Note Signed, "Rufus Ingalls" on a 6p. quarto, official copy of a letter submitted by General Joel Palmer addressed to Ingalls, datelined Dayton Oregon Territory, January 3, 1858, which provides information "upon the relative merits of routes from this coast to the Great Salt Lake City, [&] when to be traveled…" with table of mileage and mentions "Colonel Buchanan during his Campaign against the Coast and Rogue River Indians in 1856". Ingalls has penned at bottom "The foregoing is from Genl. Palmer late Superintendent of Indian Affairs a gentleman of much merit and great experience in land traveling. Fine.
