COOPER, Samuel (178-1876) was a career United States Army staff officer, serving during the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. Although little-known today, Cooper was also the highest-ranking Confederate general during the American Civil War. After the conflict, he remained in Virginia as a farmer. War Department Document Signed "S. Cooper" as Adjutant General, 2pp. octavo, Washington, April 1, 1853, being General Orders No. 9, pertaining to a military tribunal. Fine condition.
