TLS: Leonard Wood (1860-1927) Harvard graduate 1884, Medal of Honor recipient; commander of the "Rough Riders", major general and much more. Headquarters Eastern Department, Governors Island, N. Y., Sept. 26, 1914 to Editor Hamilton Holt of New York City's "The Independent." Great commentary concerning the war in Europe including his inability to comment on the subject because of confidentiality, reading, in part: "…I have no faith that we are even approaching a general disarmament. I believe that in arbitration we have a means for arranging many non-vital questions--nothing more. Wars do not have their origin in personable likes or dislikes, but are brought about by commercial and race influences; and until…all questions of race expansion are settled. I do not believe they will pass off the field…the present war, while it seems gigantic, will…be rather insignificant…Leonard Wood." Near fine
