GORGAS, Josiah (1818-1883) was one of the few Northern-born Confederate generals and was later president of the University of Alabama. Letter Signed "J. Gorgas, Lt. Col"., on printed letterhead Confederate States of America, War Department, Ordnance Office" Richmond, October 28th, 1861, to General Foster, 2pp. on lined blue paper. In part, "I telegraphed you today in relations to Locks ... I have found a party who is willing to get up a good lock on the plan of a spring on the Guard Plate, obviating the necessity of a Lock Plate, Sear and Sear Spring .... If you think they will do, we will direct the party to get up a sample lock ..."
