Group of three war-date Union general's letters, includes: WOOL, John (1784-1869) was an officer in the United States Army during three consecutive U.S. wars: the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. By the time of the Mexican-American War, he was widely considered one of the most capable officers in the army and a superb organizer. He was one of the four general officers of the United States Army in 1861, and was the one who had the most Civil War service. When the war began, Wool, age 77 and a brigadier general for 20 years, commanded the Department of the East. He was the oldest general on either side of the war. Autograph Letter Signed, "John E. Wool Major General" 1pp. quarto, September 22, 1862, Fort Monroe, addressed to General O'Phelps, and reads in part: "...I send by Colonel Losin, including eighteen officers, one hundred and ninety two (192) men and officers. You will give them a place in your camp..." Very good condition... ....plus; BLENKER, Louis (1812-1863) Union Brigadier General. War-date autograph "Blenker's Division Camp Hunters Chapel, 24/2 62 to remember Louis Blenker" Large bold signature. plus ; HARDIE, James Allen (1823-1876) was an American soldier, serving in a number of important administrative positions in the Union Army during the American Civil War. ... plus, Partly-printed war-date Pass, signed Brigadier General James Hardie, 1pp. Washington D.C., December 22, 1864, for to civilians at Port Royal.
