A great early Kentucky frontier letter, written by Connecticut born Noah S. Pond (1815-1875) whose brothers were Gideon Hollister and Samuel William Pond both of whom were early Minnesota settlers and missionaries among the region's Dakota Sioux Tribes, 3pp. 4to., New Design, [Trigg Co.], Kentucky, Mar. 7, 1837, to his sister Jennett Hine, reading, in part: "…I am very lonesome here…it gives me greet pleasure to get a letter from Connecticut. I have a room…and a little Nigger to wait on me. The folks thatI live with are very clever. The family consists of Mr. McAllister & wife…and a little daughter ten or twelve years old…you want to know how the folks spend their Sabbath here. They go a visiting and read newspapers and such…how I spent mine…it was a very pleasant day and in the forenoon I…walked down to the spring. The spring is in a little cave in a limestone rock. The dog went down with me and…he started off into the bushes and…run a rabbit into the spring and cached it…the Nigger dressed it and cooked it…they don't have preaching here like you do in Conn. and don't have any meeting unless they have preaching…I can preach better…than the Priests can for they are nothing but farmers…I think that I had better preach to white folks than to be going off among the Indians…I do not feel quite as well today on account of an affair that we had amongst the Niggers last night…Noah S. Pond…". Attached is the original transmittal panel with an unrecorded postal postmark of "New Design, Ky. March. 7, [1837]." This cover and the other Noah Pond letters in this catalog all have transmittal covers with "New Design" post marks and are perhaps the only ones in existence! Light soiling, else VG
