Document, 4pp, February 4, 1848, by Nicholas G. Marsh, being his Last Will and Testament. After specific gifts to named family members (brother, sister, others) on the first page. We now see from page two the provisions for the slaves. In part, “I hereby emancipate and set free my woman slave Caper and make the following promise for her; she is to occupy the House she now occupies or as good a one during her life and shall be fed and clothed by Trustee and provided for and shall receive of him the sum of twenty dollars at the end of each year. But she is to remain and work on the farm ...” Then later, “I devise to my Brother ... as my Trustee, the farm ... and the slaves I own to him - subject to the following ... He is to see that my slaves be well treated and attended to as long as they live. And all of the children of said slaves born after my death shall be raised and attended to ... until they are 21 years old and as they attain to that age, they will be free. ... My objective is that my land and slaves shall be kept together until the slaves to be born shall be raised & liberated. ...”
