c. 1800 Federal Period, Historic Liverpool Creamware Pitcher, with Three Transfers, “WASHINGTON IN GLORY - AMERICA IN TEARS” and “THE CORDWAINERS ARMS” with Scripted Monogram “E M C” Washington Memorial Period, Choice Very Fine. This rare type was produced in Memory and Commemoration of the life of President George Washington just after his death in December 1799. This example has two large main black transfers and measures 9” tall x 5” at its base. The one transfer is listed as “W.44” on page 207 of David Arman’s great reference book, “Anglo-American Ceramics Part I”. Overall in very nice condition, having a few trivial bottom edge rim and tiny spout chips from light wear and actual use. It shows a central image of an Obelisk with a central Portrait of General George Washington facing left, with the text “Born Feb 11, 1732 - Died Dec 14, 1799” being flanked by a bowed in mourning American Eagle, accompanied by the mourning depiction of “America” appearing as a woman. The legends text at top reads, “Washington In Glory” and at bottom reads “America In Tears” both within banners. The second transfer is titled, “THE CORDWAINERS ARMS”, it is not listed in Arman. This transfer shows the Coat of Arms for the London Cordwainers which made all types of leather goods, including quality footwear from goat leather. The transfer shows a banner at top which reads, “THE CORDWAINERS ARMS”, a goat head below, with a central shield with three goat heads and chevron. The shield is flanked by two men, one holding a boot and the other a woman’s shoe. The banner at bottom reads “NULLA INVERTITUR ORDO”, which means, Order is not inverted by violence. Under the spout is a monogram “EMC” inside a floral wreath. A lovely quality Historic Liverpool Creamware Pitcher that is excellent for display.
