A good 1860 presidential election letter, 2pp. 4to., written by merchant John Blair, May 23, 1860, Doylestown, [Ohio], to the publisher of the Ohio Patriot, Thomas S. Woods (?-1867), as a delegate to the 1860 Democrat Convention, reading, in part: "…I see by the [Ohio] Patriot that you are at home again…I am sorry you could not accomplish your mission in a manner satisfactory to all parts of the country but think under existing circumstances it was best for you to adjourn to a future day. I do not approve the course of the seceding delegates - it would have been better not to have attempted to make any platform . The Constitution is platform enough. On this we should all be willing to stand.The legislative powers of our government are vested in representatives chosen by the people whose only guide is the Constitution which they are sworn to support and no convention has a right to point out the course which they shall pursue, neither - a faithful Representative would be governed by their mandate. Since platforms have come in vogue defeat has been continually staring us in the face. Give us a good man for our standard bearer with the constitution and laws for the platform and he will be elected, and if he should go astray the Supreme Court will set him right. Give us Breckinridge and we can sweep the field. I do not think Douglas can carry the state. His friends here have been the cause of our defeat for the last two years and we cannot expect those who have be[en] defeated at our last two elections to go into the campaign with any degree of enthusiasm to elect the very man who, indirectly has been the cause of their defeat. Four fifths of the Democrats of our own country are opposed to him - John Blair-". Negligible soiling, else VG.
