War-date view bust CDV of Thomas A. Smyth (1832-1865) born County Cork, Ireland who emigrated to the United States in 1854 enlisted in the war becoming major in the 1st Delaware Vols., commanded a brigade at Gettysburg where he was wounded while helping repulse Pickett's Charge and was again wounded, this time severely and paralyzed, at the battle of Farmville, Va. during the Appomattox Campaign. He died on April 9, 1865 making him the last high ranking Union general to be killed during the war. Published by G. W. Tomlinson, Boston. Lighting spotting, else VG.
