Imprint, “War With Mexico., Speech of Hon. John A. Dix, of New York, in the Senate ... On the bill reportedfrom the Committee on Military Affairs to raise, for a limited time, an additional Military Force ...” 15pp, Washington, VG. Dix recommends continued occupation and reinforcement of our occupied Mexican territories. Dix had an interesting career, Secretary of the Treasury, Governor of New York and Union major general during the Civil War. He was notable for arresting the pro-Southern Maryland legislature, preventing that divided border state from seceding, and for arranging a system for prisoner exchange via the Dix-Hill cartel, concluded in partnership with Confederate Major General Daniel Harvey Hill.
